NEWBERRY — The Bulldogs varsity baseball team snaps a four-game losing streak with a dominate performance at home. Newberry(4-5,1-3 region 5-AAA) defeated Fairfield Central(1-5,1-1 region 3-AA) by the score of 19-1 at home on Wednesday, March 25th.
The Bulldogs entered Wednesday’s contest coming off their worst loss of the season on Monday against the hot Clinton Red Devils. Fairfield Central got off to a promising start in the first inning with their first two hitters reaching base. Logan Watkins hits a RBI double to bring in the first run for the Griffins before the Bulldogs were able to retire the side.
The good luck ran out for the Griffins as they quickly found themselves in a hole at the bottom of the first inning. Ty Abrams got things started for the Bulldogs with a leadoff walk. He was then able to steal two second and third base to put himself in scoring position before he eventually scored to tie the game at 1-1. The hits and runs would then begin to come pouring in for Newberry.
The home team would score five runs at the bottom of the first inning and would have a 5-1 lead heading into the second inning.
Fairfield couldn’t chip away at the deficit at the top of the second inning and that would be the beginning of the end for them. Newberry loaded up the bases before they had one out at the bottom half of the second inning and that forced the Griffins to make a pitching change. That was not enough to slow the home team down and Newberry would score 14 runs in the second inning.
The Bulldogs led 19-1 at the top of third inning and would close the game out strong against Fairfield Central before it was called due to the South Carolina High School League varsity baseball mercy rule.
Newberry will have a few days off before returning back to the diamond on March 30 against Union County on the road.
