PROSPERITY, S.C. — The Rebels varsity boys’ basketball team suffered a late season setback as they lose at home in a critical region game. Mid-Carolina(9-13, 3-5 region 3-AA) fell at home to Fairfield Central(10-9, 5-2 region 3-AA) by the score of 52-36 on Thursday, Feb. 5th.
Mid-Carolina has put together an amazing bounce back season, but they entered last Thursday’s contest losers of three of their last four games and were looking to turn that around.
The Griffins got off to a hot start to begin the game and went on a 15-2 run and held the Rebels scoreless for the first three minutes of the game. The Rebels called a timeout to regroup and then stormed back to go on a 10-0 run themselves behind junior guard Landon Wicker. The sharpshooter knocked down two three-pointers during their run to help get them back into the game.
Mid-Carolina climbed their way back into the game but still trailed 19-12 at the end of the first quarter. Neither team could get much going in the second quarter after their hot starts in the opening quarter.
The Rebels found themselves down 24-12 in the early parts of the second quarter and then went on a 7-0 run to cut into the deficit. Wicker added another four points to his scoring totals in the first half. He finished with 10 first half points which really helped the home team because their eighth grade sensation Treyvon Smith struggled early in this game.
Fairfield Central would go into halftime with a 28-21 lead over the home team. The third quarter is where things would get out of hand for Mid-Carolina.
The visiting Griffins would lead by as many as 20 points and would hold the Rebels scoreless for nearly three minutes to start in the third quarter.
Mid-Carolina only scored seven points in the third period and found themselves trailing 44-26 going into the fourth quarter.
Wicker cooled down in the second half and Smith eventually got things going but it was a case of too little and too late. Smith scored all nine of his points in the second half. Wicker finished the game with a team-high of 14 points, but scored four points in the second half.
Fairfield Central would continue their strong play and close out the Rebels in the fourth quarter to cruise to another region win. They are now second place in the region with just two losses and three more region games left in the final week of the regular season.
Mid-Carolina suffered another loss on Saturday, Feb. 7th on the road against Eau Claire and will have a pair of home games against region opponents to close out the regular season. The first of their last two regular season games will be on Tuesday, Feb. 10th against Clinton. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
