NEWBERRY — The Wolves shined under the Saturday night lights at Setzler Field for their home opener and had a dominating win to move to 2-0. Newberry College(2-0) held Point University(0-3) scoreless with a 49-0 win in their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 13.
Newberry College put on a show for their home crowd in front of 2,609 fans in attendance on Saturday night. The Wolves’ offense got off to a slow start on their first drive and was forced to punt. That would be the first and last time the Wolves’ punter would make an appearance in the first half.
Starting quarterback Reed Charpia would lead the Wolves on three consecutive scoring drives to close out the quarter. The first score would come on a three play drive that ended with Charpia finding Rico Dorsey Jr. down field for a 41-yard touchdown pass.
The Wolves’ defense would get their offense the ball back quickly, and the offense would go on another short scoring drive. Charpia found senior wide receiver Keith Desaussure for a 12-yard touchdown reception to give the home team a 14-0 lead.
The running backs would get in on the action on their third drive with Kenmane Brunson finding the end zone on a 14-yard touchdown run. The Wolves led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Desaussure would find the end zone again in the early parts of the second quarter. The speedy wide receiver caught a pass over the middle and hit a spin move to lose three defenders and reverse field for a 40-yard touchdown reception where he did most of the work.
Then, late in the second quarter Dwayne Wright would put the Skyhawks to bed with a seven-yard touchdown run to give the Wolves a 35-0 lead heading into halftime.
Newberry College would play mostly backups in the second half and cruise to their second win of the season.
“That was part of the message coming out of the locker room. I told the guys, ‘we have been in the fire, you know how to win. You know how to seal it up, get it done at the end and win a ball game. So lets go out there and win a ball game like I know you can do.’ I think the kids took to that and another challenge that I gave them was playing up to our level,” said Wolves’ head coach Todd Knight.
“We talked about cleaning it up and keeping flags to a minimum. When you do that then it will always give you a chance to be successful. Last week we had five flags for like 40-something yards, you will take that every game and tonight we had three flags. If we continue this trend, I think it will keep us going in the right direction.”
Charpia went 19-of-21 with 241 passing yards and three passing touchdowns. Desaussure had four receptions for 75 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
“Keith Desaussure is a returning all-conference guy and there is no way to describe him other than he is a freak of nature! You can’t touch this guy in the open field and he’s been getting it done his whole career. The thing that I love to see in this senior year for him is that the maturity level finally caught up with the athletic ability and that is making him a complete player now. He is a Grey stripe, he is a leader, he is a captain and he is a great player and always been a great player but now you are getting the real deal and a total package that Keith can bring to this program,” said Knight.
Newberry College will put their undefeated record to the test as they host Catawba College(2-1) this Saturday at Setzler Field. Kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m.
