BATESBURG, S.C. —Newberry Academy(1-3,0-2 region) is finally in the win column this season. The Eagles beat King Academy(1-3) 26-14 in a road battle on Thursday, Sept. 12 to get their first win of the season.
Newberry Academy had a rough opening month of the season. They lost their season opener at home against Laurens Academy and had to go on the road for three straight weeks for some tough matchups which included, Richard Winn and Wardlaw.
Javon Conway led the way in the backfield with 12 carries, 110 yards rushing, 60 yards receiving and one receiving touchdown. Thomas Mclean had 58 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.
Quinn Waites had his best game through the air so far in the early parts of the season. Waites went 7-of-11 for 85 yards and two passing touchdowns. Emory Pye led the team in receiving with 51 yards and one touchdown reception.
Mclean also played well on the defensive side of the ball with 10 total tackles and two fumble recovers.
“It felt great to finally get a win. We didn’t play a perfect game and still have some things to improve, but I am happy with how hard our guys played for the entire game,” said Eagles’ head coach Rich Doran.
Newberry Academy will be back in action at Newberry College on this Friday against Oakbrook Prep for homecoming.
