PROSPERITY — The Mid-Carolina Rebels varsity baseball team snagged a late lead and defeated Greenwood 8-4 on Saturday to win the Peach Ridge Invitational Championship.
The Rebels capture the title just one year after placing second in the same preseason tournament.
Mid-Carolina got things started in the first inning when Bryce Medlock singled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs.
The Rebels held the early 2-1 lead until Greenwood tied the game on a fielder’s choice and a bang bang play at the plate in the bottom of the fifth. The Rebels recaptured the momentum in the top of the sixth frame with a Jackie Stroud double and an error on a ground ball to second by Tanner Folk. Greenwood quickly got the next two outs which brought Preston Bookman to the plate. Bookman stroked a two out, two strike hard hit fly ball that drove the center fielder deep into the right field gap. The center fielder dropped the ball and two runs scored on the play. BJ Tobe kept the frame going with a two strike single of his own. Connor Gray finished the scoring with a two out line drive single that plated Bookman and Tobe.
Jackie Stroud was the winning pitcher for the Rebels. Stroud threw five strong innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out four. Wesley Livingston threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen. Livingston recorded the last six outs to earn the save for Mid-Carolina.
Preston Evans took the loss for Greenwood. He surrendered five runs on four hits over three innings, striking out three and walking zero. Garrett Major started the game for Greenwood. He went three innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out one and walking one.
The Rebels collected 11 hits on the day. Conner Gray, Stroud, and Medlock all had multiple hits. Gray went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Mid-Carolina Rebels Varsity in hits.
Tanner Folk, Tyler List and Cole Bouknight brought home all Tournament Team Honors. Wesley Livingston took home the tournament MVP after strong showings in all of the games.
