Brown out as police chief

The city said that Dennis Brown, shown, is no longer the chief of the Newberry Police Department, effective Tuesday.

NEWBERRY — Dennis Brown, hired last July to lead the Newberry City Police Department, is no longer the chief of police, the city manager said Tuesday night.

Newberry City Manager Al Harvey confirmed that the services of Dennis Brown had been terminated, effective Tuesday.

Harvey said it was a personnel matter and said he could not comment further.

Brown was hired to replace Jackie Swindler, who retired from the position after 38 years with the department. Brown left the Folly Beach Police Department to take police chief’s job in Newberry. His first official day on the job was July 2, 2014.

A panel consisting of George Routon, Barbara Chapman, Misty West, Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green and Ben Thomas, assistant chief of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, made the recommendation to hire Brown after whittling the 24 applications it received down to 10 and then to five.

Harvey gave no indication what the next step would be in finding a replacement.
