Game 1: Whitmire 16, McCormick 0
Junior Kenleigh Epps got the start in the circle for the Lady Wolverines in the first game of their Friday doubleheader against the winless Chiefs. Epps didn’t get credit for the no-hitter and complete game because of the mercy rule, but she had a dominate performance with nine strikeouts and didn’t give up a hit.
On offense, Whitmire dominated at the plate but got off to a slow start. Ariana Jenkins got things started with a RBI triple to bring in the first run for the home team. Autumn Gilliam was able to keep the momentum going by bringing in another run with a RBI single to give the Lady Wolverines an early 2-0 lead.
Brielle Whitmire would add to the lead with a RBI single to give the home team a 3-0 lead at the end of the first inning. The second inning is when the Lady Wolverines would really do majority of their damage by adding six runs to the scoreboard. Epps would provide her own run support with a RBI on a sacrifice pop fly.
Jenkins continued her strong performance at the plate by reaching base again with a single. She would later score from third base on a wild pitch. Whitmire would add three more runs to extend their lead to 10-0 at the end of the second inning. The Lady Wolverines would close things out with six more runs in the third inning to pick up the win in game one of the doubleheader.
Game 2: Whitmire 15, McCormick 0
Holly Robertson got the start for Whitmire at pitcher in game two. She also had a strong outing, but did give up McCormick’s first hit of the day in the early part of the first inning. The freshman quickly settled down and was able to get out of the inning without giving up a run.
Whitmire immediately went to work when they were at bat. The first two batters reached base with back-to-back walks. Then, both base runners quickly scored on a throwing error by McCormick. Two more Whitmire runs would score on a walk and a throwing error to give them a 4-0 lead. The Lady Wolverines would continue to add more runs to the scoreboard after the bases cleared on a hard hit ball to the outfield to give the home team a 9-0.
Brielle would get an inside the park home run to cap off the inning and give the Lady Wolverines a 11-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
Whitmire would add another four runs in the second inning to close out the game and cruise to another win in the doubleheader sweep.
The Lady Wolverines would earn another sweep in a doubleheader match against Calhoun Falls Charter on March 31 after defeating Thornwell on March 30. Whitmire will return back to the diamond on April 8th against Newberry on the road in hopes to extend their 10-game win streak.
