NEWBERRY COUNTY — Newberry County Council unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing the month of March as Disabilities Awareness Month in Newberry County during last week’s council meeting.

The proclamation recognizes the numerous people in our community who experience lifelong disabilities and celebrate the contributions of those who work, live, learn and serve throughout Newberry County. The proclamation also honors the family members, caregivers and service providers who support individuals with disabilities every day.

During the meeting, a representative was unable to attend to accept the proclamation, but was presented the following day by County Administrator Ted Luckadoo.

Continuing with recognitions, Whitmire Fire Station 3 and Whitmire Rescue Quad Station 18 were recognized for their contributions to the county.

Emergency Services Director Tommy Long highlighted both of the departments during the always anticipated recognitions portion of the meeting.

The Whitmire Fire Department has served the community since 1922 with 28 members today, including one member with 37 years of service and four others with 33-36 years of service. The department responded to 130 calls of service last year from the main station and the Indian Creek sub-station and has a number of members who are certified to teach CPR, First Aid and AED training.

The Whitmire Rescue Squad was founded in 1963 and was one of the first licenses ambulance providers in the state. Today, the squad has 22 members with two certified EMT’s and three certified paramedics with members also trained in trench rescue and automobile extrication. Last year, they responded to nearly 200 calls for service including more than 50 medical transports, extrication, rope rescue, missing persons searches, trench collapse incidents and storm response.
