NEWBERRY — The Newberry Wolves women’s wrestling team took the mat against some of the top competition in the region this weekend at the WWR NCAA Region III Tournament, battling through a deep field in pursuit of national qualification spots.
The Wolves were represented across multiple weight classes and saw several strong performances highlighted by bonus-point victories and hard-fought matches against nationally competitive programs.
At 103 pounds, Celeste Welch delivered one of Newberry’s top performances of the tournament. After dropping her opening bout, Welch responded in the consolation bracket with an impressive 16-15 decision over her opponent from MU. The back-and-forth match showcased Welch’s poise in tight situations, as she edged out the one-point victory to keep her tournament run alive.
Irie Edwards competed at 180 pounds and opened her tournament with a dominant 2-0 performance, earning a first-period fall in just 15 seconds over her opponent from WAYNE. Edwards’ quick pin marked the fastest victory of the day for the Wolves and demonstrated her ability to capitalize early. She continued to battle throughout the bracket, facing tough competition from nationally ranked programs.
At 131 pounds, Brittany Gordon secured a strong win in her opening-round consolation match, defeating her opponent from MCD by a 6-1 decision. Gordon controlled the pace offensively and defensively, earning key points to stay in contention. She later faced a challenging matchup against a RAND opponent in a tightly contested bout.
Mia Proctor (145) picked up a victory in the championship preliminary round, earning a 4-0 decision over her SVU opponent to advance in the main bracket. Proctor showed solid positional control and awareness throughout the match, collecting key points to secure the shutout win before encountering tough competition later in the tournament.
The tournament marked the conclusion of the Wolves’ 2025–2026 season.
