NEWBERRY — The Lady Bulldogs celebrated their Senior Night in their last home game for the regular season, but couldn’t overcome the dominate play of the Keenan’s back court. Newberry(7-13, 3-4 region 4-AAA) fell 83-45 to Keenan(15-6,7-0 region 4-AAA) on Tuesday, Feb. 10th.
The regular season is coming to an end and the playoffs is near. Newberry has secured a playoff spot with a top four finish in their region, but wanted to close the regular season out with an upset win over the top team in the region on Senior Night. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be after a competitive first half.
Freshman guard Armanti Shelton and senior forward Jasmine Robinson were in attack mode early for the Lady Bulldogs in the first quarter. The two combined to score 17 of the team’s total 19 points in the opening quarter and both finished the first half scoring in double figures.
Shelton scored nine points in the first quarter and made three-of-four free throw attempts. Robinson scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds in the opening quarter. The senior forward also was pest on the defensive end.
The second quarter was a back-and-forth for both teams to begin the quarter, but the Lady Raiders start to create some separation for themselves on the scoreboard. The home team only scored 12 points in the second period after their hot start and found themselves trailing at the half.
The third quarter is when the visiting Raiders made their run and took complete control of this game. They held Newberry to just five points in the quarter and held them scoreless for nearly three minutes to start the second half.
Sophomore guard Taelor Lee-Sutton and senior forward Aaeronna Cuaghman dominated the third quarter. Lee-Sutton scored eight of her game-high 21 points in the third quarter. She also added 11 assists and eight steals to go with her 21 total points.
Cuaghman scored six of her 17 total points scored in the third quarter and she was able to get three steals as well. She finished the game with 17 points, seven rebounds and six steals. Four of Keenan’s starting five finished the game scoring at least nine or more points.
Newberry couldn’t handle the Raiders full court defensive pressure in the third period and found themselves trailing 54-36 heading into the fourth quarter.
Keenan was able to close out Newberry in the fourth quarter with a dominate second half performance to spoil the big night for the Bulldogs’ seniors.
Despite the tough loss, the seniors were all celebrated after the game right before the boys’ game began. Newberry will close out the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 12th against Swansea on the road. A win will keep them as a top-three team in the region standings
