FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA — The Newberry College wrestling team put together a strong showing this weekend at the 2025 Georgia Open, facing off against several top programs from across the region. The Wolves picked up multiple wins throughout the day as they continued to build momentum early in the season.
At 125 pounds, freshman Gage Summers highlighted the day for Newberry, earning an impressive 17-1 technical fall over Southeastern’s Jacob Bucci in the consolation bracket. Summers also battled tough in championship action against Erick Hair before dropping a close 4-2 decision.
In the 149-pound division, Antonio Amos represented Newberry in championship competition but fell to Southeastern’s Jaxon Mackey by technical fall.
At 174 pounds, Josh Echeverria advanced to the quarterfinals after a strong 12-2 major decision win over Husam Mustafa of Southeastern, continuing to show consistency in the middleweights for the Wolves.
In the upper weights, Dreshaun Brown competed at 184 pounds, putting up a hard fight before falling by pin in the consolation rounds. Fellow 184-pounder Hayven Jenkins also wrestled tough, narrowly dropping a 9-7 decision in championship action against Southeastern’s Derek Washington.
The Wolves will look to build on this performance as they continue their early-season slate as they return to the mat on November 13th in Eleazar Arena.
