NEWBERRY — The Newberry County Touchdown Club hosted its final meeting of the 2025 season on Monday, November 3rd at Central United Methodist Church. The three Newberry County are high schools and Newberry College football players packed the conference room with their families and local business owners that support the Newberry County Touchdown Club. The guest speaker was former Newberry Observer Sports Editor Will Vandervort. He worked for the Observer from 2001-2004 before transitioning to a senior writer for the Clemson Insider.
Vandervort briefly discussed his journey through the media business and discussed the current state of athletics at Clemson University. He also went into detail about some of the problems that have plagued the Clemson football team this season and of course he opened the floor for questions. The experienced writer gave the listeners some insight on current head coach Dabo Swinney’s status after this season and future with the Tigers. Don’t worry Clemson fans, Swinney will be returning in 2026 unless he decides to leave the program on his own.
The most important thing was to celebrate the student-athletes for the final month of the regular season. Newberry High School received special recognition for completing an undefeated regular season for the first time since 2001. Mid-Carolina was also recognized for winning their first region title and hosting a playoff game at home since 2009.
