NEWBERRY — One half of the dynamic backfield duo for Newberry Academy was selected to play in the Futures All-Star game. Junior running back Thomas Mclean put in another stellar season for the Eagles and help lead them to their first playoffs berth since the 1998 season.
Often called the ‘heart and soul’ of the Eagles by his coaches and teammates, Mclean had 104 carries for 849 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. On defense, he led the Eagles with 74 total tackles and was second on the team in sacks with five and added two tackles for loss. The two-way star tallied three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one defensive touchdown, which was the only defensive touchdown Newberry Academy scored this season.
The Futures All-Star game took place on Dec. 6th at Calhoun Academy. The game showcased some of the best upperclassmen in the SCISA association.
