NEWBERRY — With the help of a 11-point streak from Samantha Creed the Newberry College women’s basketball team defeated Queens University of Charlotte 76-49. The game was the Wolves’ home opener and the first South Atlantic conference game of the season.

The Wolves got on the board first with a layup from Emily Perry 30 seconds into the game. Nicola Handreck followed with a 3-pointer at the 7:52 mark. The game was tied (7-7) with 6:15 left in the first quarter from a layup from Meg Essex.

With 3:02 left Jaya Schultz made a layup followed by a 3-pointer from Samara Hill. In the last minute of the first quarter Newberry scored five points. Essex made a layup with Handreck closing out the quarter with a layup and one free throw.

In the second quarter Newberry scored 11 points before Queens finished a shot. Creed started the spree off with a fast break layup at 8:36. At the 7:20 mark, Hannah Lepaio drained a jumper in the paint followed by a jumper from Schultz two minutes later. With 4:50 until halftime Handreck made a layup then a free throw 20 seconds later. Hill finished a pass from Essex for a layup with 3:59 left.

With just 90 seconds left in the second quarter Perry sunk a 3-pointer for a 31-16 lead. Essex had the final shot for Newberry with 24 seconds left for the 33-19 lead.

Before Creed went on her 11-point run she scored a 3-pointer just 14 seconds into the third quarter.Kirsten Dunsmore made back-to-back layups in the eighth minute.

With 7:12 left Creed started her run by scoring a 3-pointer by finishing a pass from Dunsmore. Less than a minute later Creed made another 3-pointer with the assist going to Handreck. At the 5:36 mark Creed finished another pass from Handreck for a 3-pointer. To finish her 11-point run Creed made a fast break layup with 5:14 left.

Brandi Hall got on the board with 2:54 left until the final quarter with a layup. Schultz scored Newberry’s last two baskets in the third quarter with a jumper and a layup.

In the final quarter the Wolvex scored 19 points to take the win. While Queens scored the first basket of quarter, Essex answered back quickly with a layup. Essex then made two free throws at the 7:56 mark.

Dunsmore finished a pass from Hill with a layup followed by a 3-pointer from Handreck. With four minutes left in the game Dunsmore was fouled and hit both free throws. Colleen Leung and Hall finished the game for Newberry with one layup a piece.

For the game, Creed scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds, and had one block and one steal. Essex and Handreck both scored 12 points each. The team shot 75 percent from the free throw line and 61.5 percent from the arch.

The Wolves are back on the road on Nov. 28 at Francis Marion. The game will begin at 2 p.m.
