NEWBERRY, SC – Newberry College is thrilled to announce its acceptance of an invitation to compete in the inaugural Throwdown on the Yorktown, a prestigious and historic event to take place on Friday, November 8th. This will be the first-ever collegiate wrestling event on the flight deck of the USS Yorktown.
Newberry College Wrestling will face Lander University aboard the USS Yorktown, the World War II Aircraft Carrier docked in the Charleston Harbor. The Citadel Bulldogs will headline the event with matches against Virginia and Army, while other involved schools will compete in duals spread across the evening.
The Newberry College Wrestling Team, under the leadership of fourth-year Head Coach Deral Brown, is eager to showcase its talent and competitive spirit on a major stage.
“As soon as we saw on social media, our group chat was blowing up,” said Coach Brown. “They are so excited. There’s going to be a flyover during the event as well. Everyone is trying to prove themselves as a starter to be able to compete in the event.”
Spectators will enjoy a backdrop of the Charleston Harbor, as Newberry will face off against Lander University. Both schools will be returning multiple NCAA qualifiers to this year’s roster with four from Lander and five from Newberry. This type of talent at an early season matchup aboard an aircraft carrier has the potential to create a lot of buzz throughout the region.
“This is a terrific event that will showcase all the great collegiate wrestling in our region,” said Newberry College Athletic Director, Sean Johnson. “We are excited that our student-athletes will get to be part of it.”
