NEWBERRY – Newberry College men’s basketball coach Jason Taylor has announced that he is resigning to accept the Associate Head Coach position at Morehead State.
“We could not be more grateful for all Coach Taylor and his family have done for our student-athletes, department and community,” said Newberry College Athletics Director Sean Johnson. “We are happy that Jason and Monica will be closer to their families, and we are grateful for the impact they have made here at Newberry College.”
Taylor posted a winning overall (65-61) and South Athletic Conference record (52-46) during his five seasons.
His 2022-23 squad posted a 19-10 record including a 12-6 mark in league play, hosted a SAC Tournament first round game and finished second in the SAC Piedmont Division. The 19 wins were the most for a Wolves team since the 2014-15 squad.
“I cannot accurately express my appreciation and admiration for everyone in the Newberry College Community,” said Taylor. “The college, community, alumni, and supporters accepted me and my family from day one and treated us in a way that made us all feel special and loved. For that, as well as the opportunity to serve as the head men’s basketball coach at such an amazing place, I say thank you and God Bless the Scarlet and Gray.”
Morehead State is an NCAA Division 1 institution located in Morehead, Ky. Last season they won the Ohio Valley Conference and appeared in the NCAA Tournament.
Coach Taylor will work for one of his former student-athletes, Jonathan Mattox, who played for him at Anderson University.
There was a reception held to thank Coach Taylor and his family on Wednesday, May 29 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. on the second floor of Founders Fieldhouse.
