ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Newberry College men’s golf team played in the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Golf Championships on last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at Orangeburg Country Club and finished in 9th place at 50-over for the week.
Lincoln Memorial took home the winners’ trophy at 15-over, followed by Coker at 25-over, Anderson (+30), Carson-Newman (+31) and Wingate (+38). The Wolves were just three shots back of seventh-place Limestone.
As a team, Newberry tied for first in par-5 scoring average over the course of the championship.
Benny Fischer led the charge for the Wolves this week, finishing in a tie for 14th place at 8-over on the par-70 course. Fischer was tied for first in both par-3 and par-5 scoring average over his three rounds, and his seven birdies tied him for fifth most in the field of 65.
Tom Hull was 13-over and the second Wolf on the leaderboard tied for 23rd. Hull, a Third Team all-conference selection last week, had three birdies over his three rounds and was one of only three players to record an eagle – his coming on the par-4 16th in the first round.
Josh Greig was a stroke behind Hull in a tie for 29th overall. Greig greatly improved on the second day, shooting a 72 after an opening-round 78. He closed with a 74 today to finish at 14-over. Greig had five birdies this week which was tied for 12th most.
Herman du Plessis (+17) shot 74-77-76 to tie for 35th. du Plessis tied for 6th in par-5 scoring over his three rounds and joined Hull as one of three players to card an eagle this week – his coming on the par-5 11th on Sunday.
Carlos Camaros-Ruiz finished at +28 in 54th. Camaros-Ruiz tied for 8th in par-3 scoring average while making three birdies throughout the tournament.
