GAFFNEY, S.C. – Competing in the SAC semifinals for the second year in a row, the Newberry College men’s lacrosse team fell to undefeated Limestone 24-13 on Wednesday afternoon at Saints Field.
Jimmy Osorio had a career-day with seven goals and an assist for the Newberry (12-4). Curtis Bukta, Caleb Forga, Miles Jones, Scott Reed, Zach Thompson and Baker Westmoreland all scored once.
Limestone (16-0) got the game started off in a hurry with three unanswered goals in the game’s first two minutes.
Osorio got the Wolves on the board three minutes in off a feed from Westmoreland. After the Saints restored their three-goal advantage, Osorio scored three straight for Newberry to tie it at 4-all with 4:37 left in the opening quarter; Osorio completed his hat trick 9:09 into the game.
Limestone scored two more in a fast-paced, high-scoring first quarter with the score 6-4 after 15 minutes.
Miles Jones made it 6-5 and Osorio added his fifth on the man advantage to even it back up at 6 with 12:04 left in the first half. The Saints followed with an eight-goal run to push their lead to 14-6 at halftime.
Limestone struck first in the second half but Osorio answered with his sixth of the day 2:14 into the closing half. Osorio’s seventh – another man-up tally – made it 16-8 a few minutes later, though the Saints carried an 18-8 margin into the fourth quarter.
The Scarlet and Gray trimmed the deficit to 19-11 thanks to consecutive goals from Thompson, Reed and Westmoreland over a three-minute period early in the final quarter.
The Saints scored five more times for a 24-11 lead. Bukta and Forga – with his first goal of the season – closed the scoring.
