GAFFNEY — The Newberry softball team opened their South Atlantic Conference slate on Mar. 2, taking on the Limestone Saints.

Game one:

The Wolves got out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning as Hannah Towery drew a lead-off walk and then scored on a single and an error off the bat of Hailey Hill. Newberry added to their lead in the fourth as Towery and Hill hit back-to-back singles and Tedi Nunn laced a single that scored Towery doubling the Wolves lead at 2-0.

The Saints cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1 and then scored four in the sixth.

The Wolves did not go away quietly as they scored two runs off of a Sierra Brogdon double that cut the Limestone lead to one and put the tying run in scoring position, but Newberry could not get her home as Limestone retired the next batter to come away with the game one win.

Game two:

Newberry once again got out to a 2-0 lead, as Mallena Wright led off the game with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, reached third on a Sierra Brogdon single, and then finally scored on another wild pitch. In the second, Nunn and Vanessa Wilson led off the inning with singles and Kasey Widmyer advanced them each 60 feet on a sacrifice bunt and Nunn scored on a passed ball to give the Wolves the 2-0 lead.

The Saints responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single, but the Wolves got that run back in the top of the third. Brogdon led off with a double and was brought home on back-to-back fly outs to make the score 3-1. The Saints tied the game in the bottom of the inning with two runs on a bases loaded walk and RBI single.

Wilson put the Wolves back in front in the top of the fourth with her first home run of the season giving Newberry the 4-3 lead. The Wolves padded their lead in the fifth as Towery would scored on a dropped third strike to make it 5-3 Wolves.

Limestone did not go away quietly as they continued the back-and-forth nature of the game with a two-RBI single in the sixth to tie the game.

Unfortunately, the Saints capitalized as they got a runner on with a single and stolen base who was brought home with an RBI single to give Limestone the walkoff and the sweep.

The results put the Wolves at a 15-7 record overall and 0-2 in SAC play.
