COLUMBIA — The Newberry Wolves mens and womens track and field teams competed at the Carolina Challenge this weekend, with numerous athletes setting personal bests and school records.
For the womens team, Charlotte Johnson finished 24th in the 60 meter dash — with a personal best time of 8.00 seconds. Johnson also set a personal best in the 200 meters with a time of 27.00 seconds. In the 60 meter hurdles, Emma Johnson set a personal best with a time of 10.15 seconds.
In the 800 meters, Alaya Lindquist and Kensley Dantzler set personal bests with times of 2:35.84 and 2:43.75, respectively, while Tashayna Flinch broke the school record and finished 48th with a time of 2:32.57. Lindquist also broke the school record in the mile with a time of 5:45.47.
Annie Bouwkamp ran 22:59.16 for the five kilometer race, setting a personal best in the process, while Iris Duke re-broke her own school record in the weight throw with a toss of 14.72 meters (48-3.5). The 4×400 meter relay of Flinch, Charlotte Johnson, D’ArionJohnston, and Tahleebah Martin also broke the school record with a time of 4:08.19.
On the mens team, Tyrese Grant set a personal best in the 60 meters, with a time of 7.40 seconds, while Elijah Fulmore set a school record in the 60 meter hurdles with a mark of 8.45 seconds. Four athletes set a personal best in the 200 meters, including Jeremiah Mack with a time of 22.95, Casey Brown with a time of 23.08, Michael Parrish with a time of 23.48, and Jalen Sturgis with a time of 24.37.
In the 400 meters, Granger Garrison broke the school record with a time of 51.04, while Fulmore ran a personal best of 51.11 and Kalyn Cook also finished in a personal best of 52.63. Chandler Stanley ran a personal best of 2:03.04 and Justin Castro ran a personal best of 2:07.76 in the 800 meter run, continuing the positive momentum for the Wolves.
Three Wolves set a personal best in the weight throw, led by Kegan Crowell with a distance of 12.52 meters (41-1). Zachary Latting threw 9.79 meters and Jon Williams threw 8.95 to round out the marks. Crowell also set a personal best with a mark of 10.89 meters (35-9).
The Wolves look to continue the positive momentum next weekend at the USC Open hosted by the University of South Carolina.
