NEWBERRY — While the Newberry High School Lady Bulldogs completed a seasonal sweep of Chapin on Tuesday night in Scott Gym, the Bulldog boys picked up their first win of the season with a one-point victory over the Eagles.
The Lady Bulldogs trailed by at least six points after each of the first two quarters, but had cut the lead to a point heading into the final stanza.
Reygan Miller scored 20 of her 26 points in the second half, as the Lady Eagles a team were held to 19 points in the final two quarters.
Rayanna Davis scored 14 points, Kelsey Felks scored nine, Nigeria Davis scored six, while the Newberry scoring ended with the two points of Zacharia Epps.
They improved to 4-1 on the season after the 57-48 victory.
With the entire nucleus of the boys basketball team on the roster since the football season is over, the Bulldog boys trailed only a few times in the fourth quarter and won 62-61.
The Eagles had the ball under the Newberry basket and no time-outs with 3.5 seconds to go in the game but a desperation shot from well beyond mid-court hit the Scott Gym ceiling, automatically turning the ball over back to Newberry with under two seconds left in the game.
All Bulldog players scored at least two points. They were led by Patrick Paul’s 19 points, including five three-pointers.
Also, Tyriq Goodman and PJ Wright had six points apiece, Terrell Rogers, Jaleel Gilliam, and Zay Chalmers (5 points each), Robert Houston and Lamarcus Moore (4 points each), while Darius Stephens-York, Tramas Ruff, Ny Downing, and Zymere Epps had two points each.
Newberry travels to Fairfield Central tonight before taking a week off for the holidays.
