NEWBERRY — Beginning in Fall 2026, students who complete the core curriculum at Newberry College will earn a Certificate of Employability Skills, a micro-credential recognizing the transferable skills employers value most in today’s workforce.
The credential formally acknowledges the practical skills developed through the college’s liberal arts foundation and highlights competencies that national workforce research identifies as critical for career success.
Recent workforce analyses, including research from the World Economic Forum and the U.S. Department of Labor, show that employers increasingly prioritize adaptable skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and digital literacy.
Newberry’s core curriculum is intentionally designed to develop these capabilities. Upon completing the core requirements, students will be awarded the micro-credential demonstrating proficiency in key transferable employment skills.
These skills include:
• Communication
• Teamwork and collaboration
• Problem-solving and critical thinking
• Reliability and dependability
• Initiative and adaptability
• Digital literacy
• Emotional intelligence
• Research and information literacy
“Employers consistently tell us they need graduates who can think critically, communicate effectively, and adapt in a rapidly changing workplace,” said Dr. David Harpool, president. “This micro-credential recognizes the essential skills our students gain through their liberal arts education and highlights their readiness for career success.”
The Certificate of Employability Skills helps students showcase their capabilities to employers while reinforcing the lifetime value of a liberal arts education as a foundation for lifelong learning and professional growth.
