NEWBERRY — The Newberry Police Department continues to investigate a shooting that occured downtown after 12 a.m. Saturday.

Police responded to Pour Richard’s Tavern, at 1504 Main Street, on March 20, in response to a report of an active fight with several gunshots, according to the report by the City of Newberry Police Department.

The report states that a large crowd described as “very irate” was observed in the roadway by the responding officer. The officer was called upon to help a victim who was laying on the ground, according to the report.

People in the crowd were heard yelling, “they shot him” and “get an ambulance.” EMS was requested by the officer and the victim was airlifted to Richland Trauma Center, per the report.

A second victim, who was shot in the back, was interviewed at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital. According to the report, they were taken to the hospital by private vehicle. The victim stated, “the shooting was coming from the opposite side of the road.” However, he did not know who was shooting.

A third party involved in the melee arrived at the hospital while the second victim was being interviewed, per the police report. That person had a laceration to her face and a tooth was knocked out. She reported being inside Pour Richard’s Tavern and was hit by a glass bottle. She then ran outside and heard gunshots, according to her statement in the police report.

The report goes on to say victims reported that a fight broke out in the bar, previous to the gunshots being heard. The report further stated that the victims ran outside after bottles were thrown during the fight.

No arrests have been made at this time.
