One arrest made in Sunday shooting

NEWBERRY COUNTY — An arrest has been made related to the shooting that took place at the Hartford Community Center, just south of the City of Newberry, that left one man dead and another injured.

Sheriff Lee Foster announced that Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Kevin Michael Holland, 25, of Pomaria, for breach of peace of a high and aggravated nature and attempted murder. Holland is in the Newberry County Detention Center under a no bond at this time.

At approximately 2:00 a.m. Sunday, law enforcement was called to the Hartford Community Center — located on S.C. 395 in the Hartford Section of Newberry County. An individual rented the community center for a party. There were a large number of people at the party when an argument and scuffle took place. Several unknown participants in the fight, along with other people, went into a crowded parking lot, where several people began shooting, according to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.

The end result was one person being shot in the leg and the other receiving a fatal gunshot wound. The wounded individual was transported to an area trauma center due to the severity of the wound. Law enforcement from the Sheriff’s Office, Newberry City, Highway Patrol, Prosperity, SLED and Whitmire were called to help control, secure and protect the crime scene.

Coroner Laura Kneece identified Jared Darnell Singley, 38, of Newberry, as the victim in the shooting. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.

Foster said the other individual shot is going to be okay, and the wound was not life threatening.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff’s Investigators developed information that Holland fired several rounds from a handgun in the parking lot of the community center — following a fight that took place inside. At this time, it is not known if those shots killed Singley. Foster said the investigation continues into the death of Singley and the wounding of another man during the shooting.

Foster added that while some information is coming into investigating Deputies, there are more people that could provide information in this case.

“There were several hundred people at this party,” said Foster. “It is inconceivable that someone did not witness the shooting that took the life of Singley. Jared Singley was someone’s child, father and friend. People should put themselves in the shoes of this family and understand how it feels to have a loved one snatched from them because of pure nonsense. Do the right thing and come forward to tell what happened. This is the only way we can get a handle on these horrible, senseless acts of violence.”

Foster said on Monday that leads were starting to trickle in, but stressed with 300-400 people there, plenty of people saw this crime.

Foster said more arrests are anticipated in this entire event.

Anyone that is willing to cooperate and provide information in the identity of the shooter should contact Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC, leave a tip through the NCSO web site at www.newberrycountysheriff.com, or 803-321-2222. Foster stressed that anyone who calls Crime Stoppers will stay anonymous. He added that they can also receive a monetary reward.
