PROSPERITY — Prosperity Town Council recognized the Mid-Carolina High School 2018 SC AAA Competitive Cheerleader Champions during Tuesday’s Council Meeting.
“Mrs. Sherry Bedenbaugh (Head Coach) and I have known each other for a long time and she pours her heart out for you guys, it takes a lot of dedication, time and effort to making sure these young ladies achieve all of their goals and do what’s right. She doesn’t worry about how much time she spends, she doesn’t worry about what time it is when she gets home, her focus is about you guys and your success,” said Mayor Derek Underwood.
Representative Rick Martin, who was unable to attend, awarded each of the ladies with certificates on behalf of the State House.
Newberry Observer Editor Andrew Wigger also presented Bedenbaugh with a framed copy of the edition commemorating the team’s win.
In other business, Heather Hawkins, Newberry Opera House ticketing and guest experience manager, spoke before Council on the Smithsonian Museum Exhibit at the Newberry Opera House.
The exhibit is open during Newberry Opera House regular box office hours, Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m.-4 p.m. During the holidays they will be closing at 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day and New Years Day.
Hawkins encouraged Council to contact her with any pictures, interviews, etc. that needed to be done to represent the history of Prosperity. She informed Council on January 7 they will be doing radio remotes to promote the collection of history, these will be held on Mondays at 9 a.m. the whole month of January and the first Monday in February.
Author Tom Poland will also be presenting Lost Traditions of the South at the Opera House on Jan. 22 at 11 a.m. and South Carolina Backroads at 7 p.m. the same night.
Other business:
• The second reading of the parking ordinance text amendment was passed after a motion from Councilman Mike Hawkins and second by Councilman Robert Martin. The ordinance will go into effect Jan. 1.
• Councilman Chad Hawkins reported public safety is going well, he is still waiting to hear from Fire Chief Kyle Vaughn regarding the sirens in town.
• Police Chief Don Evans reported for 2018, the department recorded so far 404 reports, 970 traffic citations, 58 criminal tickets (a blue ticket) and served 141 warrants. Evans is also looking to start 12 hour shifts beginning Jan. 2 from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. along with tracking vehicle maintenance himself.
• Town Administrator Karen Livingston reported due to recent rain Santa coupons, given at Spooktacular for a free picture with Santa, will be honored at Roma’s on Dec. 22 from 6-8 p.m. Livingston is also working with Councilman Robert Martin to come up with solution to issues downtown (buildings in disrepair). She also reported the retention pond at the Dixie Youth field is not draining properly and that she will begin looking at bids to put a fence around it.
