NEWBERRY — Newberry Adult Continuing Education and Newberry Family Literacy Programs partnered to host a variety of free community education classes on June 3 at their first “Community Education Day.”

The event was held on the Adult Education campus in downtown Newberry.

The programs collaborated with a goal of providing a community service to the adults and children of Newberry County through engagement in fun learning activities which would enhance their life skills.

Classes were offered for adults and children, which included cupcake decorating, paint and sip, homebuyers workshop, computer classes, financial literacy, parenting for student success, basketball skills, cheerleading skills, gardening 101, health/fitness, couponing and men’s/women’s classes.

Participants were excited to have such a variety of classes with highly qualified instructors and presenters. The classes were free and a hot breakfast was provided for a small fee.

There were three breakout sessions so that participants could attend multiple classes and learn new skills. Local vendors were also on hand.

The Community Education Day was made possible through an Adult Education and Family Literacy collaborative grant that was awarded by the State Department of Education. Community volunteers from local churches and Newberry College’s Xi Pi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi were also important groups who contributed to the success of this event.

The Newberry Family Literacy Program is a program that assists parents to continue their academic journey and reach their full potential, while encouraging parents to become their child’s first and most important teacher.

The Adult and Continuing Education Program of Newberry County serves adult learners seeking a GED, diploma, career readiness certification (Work Keys), or academic enrichment.
