FLORENCE, S.C. — Chapin Newberry Post 193/24 postseason run came to an end on July 30 after a hard fought battle against Fort Mill Post on the campus of Francis Marion University in the American Legion State Championship tournament.
Chapin Newberry fell 6-2 to Fort Mill Post. Both teams were faced with weather challenges and faced with elimination heading into this matchup. Chapin Newberry lost Florence Post by the score of 5-4 on July 28 that put them face-to-face with elimination.
Fort Mill Post lost their first game of the tournament on July 26 to Lexington Post 7 Seniors by the score of 10-7.
Now, fast forward to the elimination game between the two squads and Chapin Newberry got on the scoreboard first with a run at the top of the third inning.
Fort Mill quickly responded and added a run onto the scoreboard at the bottom of the third inning. They then took a 2-1 lead at the bottom of the fourth inning after scoring another run.
Chapin Newberry responded buy tying the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning before their opponents became too much for them to handle.
Fort Mill continued their hot streak at the plate and managed to get six hits and pile up five combined runs in the bottom of fourth and fifth innings. Most of their damaged came at the bottom of the fifth when they scored four of their six total runs scored in the game.
Both teams would go on a cold streak at the plate over the last inning and a half, but that wouldn’t matter. Fort Mill would finish with eight hits and no errors in the game, which would be enough to keep their state championship hopes alive.
Meanwhile, Chapin Newberry season came to an end after losing their second game in the SCALB State Championships, which was double elimination. They finished with a 15-11 overall record and climbed from the third spot in League 6 standings to the second place spot in the last week of the season. That helped them get to a playoffs berth, and from there the team went on two win two playoffs series to advance to the state championship tournament.
