NEWBERRY — Chapin Newberry Post(8-7, 5-4 league play) enters the last week of league play in third place in the league 6 standings after coming up just short on last Tuesday against Fort Mill Post(13-3, 8-1 league play). They lost 6-1 at home and now will need to win the remainder of their games to keep their playoffs hopes alive.

The game was played over nine innings to help both teams get extra work since it was the only game of the week for both squads with the Fourth of July holiday. Chapin Newberry had their opportunities, but couldn’t find a consistent rhythm at the plate to help bring base runners home.

They combined to get six hits as a team and only gave up six hits, but also had five errors in the game.

Fort Mill used a total of seven pitchers in the game and Chapin Newberry also used their bullpen a lot as well.

The visitors struck first at the top of first inning, which has been Chapin Newberry’s kryptonite all season. They have struggled in the first inning but always manage to fight their way back into games.

The home team threatened to score at the bottom of the second inning, but their efforts came up short after hitting a ground ball into a double play.

The visitors scored their second run of the game after a walk and another batter being hit by a pitch got two base runners on.

Chapin Newberry would finally got a run on the scoreboard at the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI single.

The home team would get two walks and two singles that would get all four players on base in the inning, but weren’t able to get any more than a run in for a score. Both teams would leave a few base runners stranded in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.

Then, Fort Mill would get things going at the plate again at the top of the eighth inning. They held a 2-1 lead heading into the inning and would add an insurance run. They also added three more runs in the ninth inning to put the game away and earn their 13th victory of the season.

Fort Mill is sitting in first place of the League 4 standings heading into the final week of the regular season. Chapin Newberry are in third place in League 6 standings. They would need to win out and some help to get into the top-two seeds for a chance at the playoffs. They will open a three game series at home on Monday, July 8th against Anderson Post. They will play two times at home this week, Monday and Friday, and a road game on Wednesday. Monday’s home game first pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
