NEWBERRY — It took extra innings to decide the final score of the American Legion league showdown between Chapin Newberry Post (5-2, 2-1 league play)and Easley Post(1-7, 1-4 league play), but the Chapin Newberry were able to get a walk off to secure a 6-5 win in 10 innings.
The two teams meet for a second time in two days on Wednesday, June 12 at Smith Road Complex on the campus of Newberry College. Chapin Newberry lost to Easley on Tuesday, June 11 by the score of 6-4 in eight innings. Easley would get their first win of the season and were looking for their second win.
Easley would score three runs at the top of the inning to jump out to an early lead in the second game of the back-to-back. Wilkes Dent got the start for Chapin Newberry but he would quickly be replaced by Liam Davenport, who got them out of the first inning jam.
The home team would struggle at the plate until the bottom of the third inning. Blair Moore would help get things started with the second single of the inning. Matthew Rollison would bring their first run in to score after he found a gap for the RBI single. Jack Coletti almost cleared the bases with his RBI triple to bring two more runs and tie the game at 3-3.
Chapin Newberry would take a 4-3 lead later on in the third inning after a sacrifice fly brought in another score. It turned into a defensive battle for both squads until the seventh inning.
At the top of the seventh, Easley would tie the ball game after an RBI single brought a runner in to score from second base. Chapin Newberry couldn’t break the tie at the bottom of the seventh so the game went into extra innings for the second consecutive night.
Neither team would score in the eighth and ninth innings. Then, Easley would add a run at the top of fifth inning to put themselves in the driver’s seat for the win.
Chapin Newberry got things going with a double from Coletti. Murray Johnson of Mid-Carolina came right behind him to get drive home a run with a RBI single. The game was now tied 5-5.
The home team would get the bases loaded and down to their last out. Maddox Floyd found a gap in right field and hit an RBI single to bring home Blake Stribble for the walkoff win.
Chapin Newberry will be back at home on Wednesday, June 19 for a game against Greenwood. They will be on the road as well this week starting on Monday, June 17 and Friday, June 21 at Greenwood. They will also be on the road at Camden on Thursday, June 20.
