NEW ORLEANS, LA. – Six members of the Newberry College track and field team earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) all-Southeast Region honors announced. Highlighting the list is senior thrower Kegan Crowell who earned honors in both hammer and discus throws.
Five men athletes and one female athlete mark the most by the men’s track and field program and the most overall in the track and field program history.
The Five men athletes include Rahyme Christian (110m Hurdles), Kegan Crowell (Hammer and Discus), Rashaad George (400m Hurdles), Sean Price (Javelin), and Landon Tucker (400m Hurdles).
Crowell won both events he’s honored in at the South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships – the hammer throw and discus. In the hammer throw, Crowell heaved it 51.46 meters (168 feet, 10 inches). Crowell threw it 53.88 meters (176 feet, 9 inches) to win the discus event by nearly 15 feet. As of this writing, Crowell is 12th in Division II for discus thanks to his throw at the Catamount Classic last month.
Christian was the South Atlantic Conference champion with a 14.24 time in the 110-meter hurdles. His 14.02 time at the Catamount Classic was his season best where he won the event.
Price was another South Atlantic Conference Champion as his 189’ 2” throw would win him the gold at the SAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. His first-place throw that went 197 feet was his season best.
George and Tucker were both receiving honors in the 400-meter hurdles. George finished in third place at the South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with his season best time of 53.18 seconds. Tucker also had his best time at the SAC Championship meet with a 53.36 second mark putting him in fourth place.
The lone female athlete honored is the sophomore thrower Leonie Samuels. Samuels was honored for her efforts in Shot Put. Leonie finished third in the SAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship with a 43 feet 11 ¼ inch throw. Her season best 46 feet 3 ¼ inch throw won her the SAC Indoor Track and Field Championship Meet’s Field Athlete of the meet.
