NEWBERRY – The Newberry College baseball team (24-25, 18-12 SAC) sent their senior class out on a high note with a double header sweep against the Wasps of Emory & Henry College (11-38, 6-24 SAC) winning game one 5-1, and following up with a 3-0 shutout victory in game two.
Junior outfielder Donovan Ford extended his hitting streak to 28 games, while becoming the ninth Newberry baseball player to get 200 career hits with his single in the eighth inning of game one. Freshman Luke Compton went 3-6 in both games with two rbis in the game one victory.
In both games, the Wolves pitchers found the strike zone as they would not allow a single walk. In game one, freshman John Rollings earned the win going three innings and striking out two Wasps. In game two, senior pitchers Rylan Brown, Johnathan White, Trevor Linaman, and Wyatt Carey pitched in with junior lefty Ethan LeBron to get the win in game two. Carey got his fifth save of the season striking out two batters to close the Wasps. The Wolves pitching held the Wasps to one run on the weekend series.
Game One
The Wolves used a four run eighth inning to top the Wasps 5-1 in game one of the senior day doubleheader.
Chandler Mims would put the Wolves on the board with a one out rbi single in the bottom of the second to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.
The Wasps would tie the game out at one in the top of the fourth, scoring their lone run of the three-game series.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Ford would get career hit 200 to start a rally with a single down the left field line. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, Compton would hit it through the right side to drive in two giving the Wolves a 3-1 lead. On the next at-bat, Jomar Lugo would rip a double down the left field line to score Kade Faircloth to make it 4-1. The Wolves would score their fourth run on an error to take a 5-1 lead into the top of the ninth.
In the top of the ninth, Rollings would finish the game as the Wolves would win 5-1.
Game One Stats
The Wolves would get multi-hit games from Henry Gibson, Luke Compton, and Bryson Nuckols.
Compton would have his 12th multi-RBI game of his freshman season.
Junior right hander Hunter French would go six innings striking out three batters in the start. Freshman John Rollings would get his second career win with three innings of relief.
Game Two
The Wolves would strike early and only allow three free passes in their 3-0 game two shutout victory to conclude the 2024 homestand.
The Wolves would get a solid outing from the five pitchers who were sent to the mound.
The Wolves scored in the bottom of the first with a clutch two-out hit from Kade Faircloth bringing in Ford to make it 1-0.
In the second, Luke White would drive in Josh Watson with a single to center field to make it 2-0.
In the third, Ford would score his second run of the game as Gibson would drive a double to left centerfield to score Ford from first to make it 3-0.
On senior day, senior Johnathan White would earn his first win of the season, while fellow senior Wyatt Carey would get his fifth save striking out the final two batters.
Game Two Stats
Ford was the lone wolf with multiple hits in the game two shutout victory.
The Wolves defense played clean as they would not have a single error throughout the game.
Newberry College will play a mid-week non-conference game on the road at Georgia College Wednesday afternoon. Next weekend the Wolves will play in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament at a site to be determined.
