NEWBERRY — The Newberry College tennis teams returned to their winning ways on Saturday afternoon, with both the men’s and women’s squads picking up South Atlantic Conference victories of the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears at Newberry HS.

The men’s team took an 8-1 win, while the women were 7-2 victors.

The Wolves return to action on Tuesday at 4 p.m., hosting the nationally-ranked Tusculum Pioneers in the home stretch, as Newberry has three SAC matches remaining in the regular season.

The men took all three doubles matches to stake themselves to an early lead and never looked back. “Los Fernandos” — Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous — were the most challenged in the doubles portion, taking an 8-6 win at No. 1.

Jordan Monosky and Jacob Svantesson earned an 8-1 win at No. 2 and Richard Zeh and Logan Adkins earned an 8-5 win at No. 3.

Svantesson was the first to finish his singles match with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 and the Wolves clinched the win with Espana’s 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1. Tous, Monosky and Angel Pizarro also earned singles wins.

The win extends Newberry’s record breaking season record to 18-2 overall and 7-1 in the South Atlantic Conference with three matches against the league’s top teams – Tusculum, Wingate and Queens – remaining. Newberry is currently tied with Wingate for third in the conference standings.

On the women’s side no. 25 Elizabeth Williamson and Amanda Carrillo each stayed undefeated on the season as the Wolves rolled to their seventh conference win of the year.

The Wolves swept through the doubles matches with Carrillo and Vanessa Ortiz rolling to an 8-3 win at No. 1 and Williamson and Tara Lamers taking an 8-2 win at No. 3. Kelly McManus and Paula Avellan won a 7-3 tiebreak to take an 8-7 win at No. 3.

Williamson moved to 18-0 on the season with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 and Carrillo clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 to move to 17-0 on the year in singles play. Avellan and Rebeca Martinez also picked up singles wins.

The Wolves are now 15-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play entering the final three matches of the season.
