NEWBERRY — The Newberry Wolves took off to a big first half lead to roll to a 12-6 win over the Point Skyhawks at Setzler Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Newberry snaps a three-game losing streak and moves to 5-4 on the season. The Wolves resume South Atlantic Conference action next Wednesday with a home match against Brevard.
Maddie Campbell scored a career-high three goals.
Jessica Baxtrom, Rachel Dillon and Ajahna Grosvenor each scored two goals. Morgan Raffaele picked up seven ground balls. Brandy Bowman made four saves.
Newberry was a perfect 17-of-17 on clear attempts. The Wolves also made five goals on free position shots.
Newberry opened the scoring less than a minute into the game on a Baxtrom free-position shot. After the Skyhawks tied up the game less than three minutes later, the Wolves went on a scoring surge.
Raffaele scored her second goal of the season at the 22:51 mark to kick off a seven-goal run. Campbell and Baxtrom notched goals to make it a 4-1 Newberry lead halfway through the period.
Grosvenor scored, followed by a pair of free-position goals from Campbell and another Grosvenor goal with 4:15 to play in the half made it an 8-1 Newberry advantage. The Wolves would take an 8-2 lead into the halftime break.
Rachel Dillon kicked off the second half scoring from a free position shot, followed by Kylee Shoopscoring off of an assist from Savannah Ohliger. Helen Kuhn netted her ninth goal of the year seven minutes into the half to make it an 11-2 lead.
Point scored four goals in the final 23 minutes, but the Wolves’ lead was too much for the guests to overcome.
