NEWBERRY — The first regular season Division II Wrestling Coaches’ Association regional rankings have been released, with the Newberry Wolves ranked third in Super Region II with six Wolves ranked in the top six of their weight class.
Newberry was ranked first in the preseason regional poll, but early results across the nation have seen Lake Erie and Findlay climb up the poll.
Huston Evans remains the top ranked 184 lbs. wrestler in the region with an overall record of 7-1.
He went 4-0 to win the championship of the Braves Classic, then was runner-up at the N.C. State Wolfpack Open. He has two wins by fall and a major decision.
Trung Duong moves up a spot to third in the region at 125 lbs. Duong is 8-2 on the year after rolling to a 4-0 record and regional wrestler of the week honors with the championship at the Braves Classic.
He went 4-2 at the N.C. State Wolf pack Open, with both losses coming to Division I wrestlers. He has one win by fall and four wins by major decision.
Jordan Simpson falls a spot to fourth at 133 lbs. He has an 8-3 record and finished third at the Braves Classic with three wins by fall. He also had three wins over Division I wrestlers at the N.C. State Wolfpack Open.
Cody Brundage holds steady at fourth at 197 lbs. with a 6-3 mark. He was runner-up at the Braves Classic, losing in the sudden victory period of the finals. He picked up three wins over Division I wrestlers at the N.C. State Wolfpack Open.
Lukas Gilmore is ranked fifth at 165 lbs., staying in the same spot as his preseason ranking. He has a 7-3 record with four wins by fall.
He was third at the Braves Classic and picked up three wins at the N.C. State Wolfpack Open.
Joe Pittman remains ranked second at 174 lbs. He has not seen action yet this season.
