WHITMIRE — The Whitmire High School Wolverines lost to the Southside Christian High School Sabres during Homecoming on Friday night, 41-0.
“I was very proud of the team’s effort. Playing the sixth ranked team in the state on a short week, during Homecoming Week, had me worried. There have been a lot of distractions and I was afraid we would not show up,” Head Coach Charlie Jenkins said. “But we did show up, I know the score might not look it. But we fought for four quarters and we absolutely did not quit.”
During the first quarter, Southside Christian scored twice, the first time with six minutes on the clock and the second with just one minute. Both kicks after the score were good. During the second quarter, Southside Christian scored once, taking the score to 21-0.
“We did a lot of good things, but they were just so big and fast,” Jenkins said. “We knew we needed to keep the ball from them as much as possible because we knew coming in that we would have a very hard time stopping them from scoring.”
During the third and fourth quarter, Southside Christian scored three more times but the extra point was only good on one try.
“There was no way for us to stand toe to toe with them, so we had to take some chances on defense. We rolled the dice a few times hoping to cause havoc which we hoped would lead to a fumble or interception. However, they were pretty solid. We only forced one turnover,” Jenkins said. “On offense we were pretty simple. We ran our base set of plays most of the night and our guys showed some confidence.”
