HARTSVILLE — Newberry showed a dominating performance at the Coker Duals, going 4-0 on the day while picking up 16 falls.

The Wolves showed their dominance on the day, defeating Ohio Valley 51-4 while also taking care of Bluefield 47-9 and Truett McConnell 50-3. Newberry had a tough opponent in No. 22 Mercyhurst, edging them by a score of 20-17.

Many Newberry wrestlers showcased their talent on the day with seven wrestlers going unscathed, but no one had a better showing than Patton Gossett (285). Gossett got off on the right foot, picking up a fall in his first match against Cameron Coffman of Ohio Valley, needing 2:07 to do so.

Gossett had a tall task to handle in his next match, facing the ninth ranked heavy weight in the country of No. 22 Mercyhurst Jacob Robb. The teams were tied coming into the match, knowing the winner would dual. The match was close in the early going until Gossett went on the offensive and came away with an 8-3 decision win. Gossett finished out his day with another fall coming in the first period of action against Truett McConnell.

Austin Palmer (157) went a perfect 4-0 on the day, including three falls coming against Ohio Valley, Bluefield and Truett McConnell. Palmers toughest match of the day came against Mercyhurst in the second round of action. It was a neck-and-neck battle against Kevin Kinyua. The match came down to the wire, but Palmer was able to sneak away with a 13-12 decision.

Isiah Royal (141) and David Giantono (149) both had impressive days for the Scarlet and Grey, each posting 4-0 records. Royal picked up two falls, one against Bluefield and Truett McConnell. Royal also won an 11-3 major decision against Aidne Burke from Mercyhurst. Royal’s last win came via forfeit from Ohio Valley.

Giantono came away with two falls as well, one against Bluefield and Truett McConnell. Giantono defeated Mike Clark of Mercyhurst in an 11-5 decision while getting a forfeit win from Ohio Valley.

Austin Neal (125) had a stellar day on the mats, going 3-1 on the day. All three of Neal’s wins came from falls against Ohio Valley, Bluefield and Truett McConnell. Neal’s lone lose came in an 18-6 major decision against Eric Bartos, the 12th ranked wrestler in the 125 division.

Joey Rocca (174), ZeBrandon Gant (184) and Brandon Dickman (184) all went undefeated on the day, picking up two wins each. Rocca and Dickman were able to obtain one pin each in their matches.

Trevor Mansfield (133) and Dylan Eaton (197) each picked up two wins while Nick Giantono (165) picked up one win for the Wolves.

Newberry will be back in action this Wednesday, January 16, as they take on Emmanuel at 7 p.m. The match will take place at Eleazer Arena, the Wolves home-opener.
