NEWBERRY — The Newberry High School Lady Bulldog basketball team advanced to the second round of the playoffs for a fourth straight year after their 86-48 home victory over Camden Monday evening.
This was the first time that Newberry and Camden met on the hardwood since they were regional opponents in the 1999-2000 season.
Newberry will play host to Pendleton on Thursday at 7 p.m. This will be the fourth straight season the two teams have met in the playoffs, with Newberry having won two of their previous meetings.
For the first time in their 13 game winning streak, Newberry found itself on the negative end of the scoreboard as the Lady Bulldogs from Kershaw county built up an 11-5 advantage to begin the contest.
The Lady Bulldogs from Newberry county though, would end the first quarter on an 11-0 run to have the 17-11 advantage at the buzzer.
Newberry started the second quarter on an eight-to-two run, forcing Camden to call a time-out with 6:11 left before the half. The visitors would call a time-out just 1:36 later after Newberry had extended its lead to 32-15.
Newberry would have a 40-24 lead at the break, while a 31-point run in the third quarter would send them into the final stanza with a 71-40 advantage.
All five Newberry starters ended in double digits as Nigeria Davis had a game-high 28 points, including garnering 12 points in the third quarter.
Kelsey Felks and Rehgan Miller each scored 14 points, while Rayanna Davis finished with 11 points and Zacharria Epps dropped in 10 points. Tashari Hayward scored four points in the fourth quarter, Kelsey Havird (three), and Diamond Davis rounded out the Newberry (21-2) scoring with two points.
