Newberry City Police Incident Log

The City of Newberry Police Department reported the following incidents:

• Jared Darnell Singley, 35, of 2604 Pine St., Newberry, was charged with DUI March 26. A patrolling officer observed a brown Chevrolet Avalanche swaying on Nance St. and initiated a traffic stop. The officer noticed the strong smell of alcohol emanating from the driver who identified himself as Singley. After failing a field sobriety test Singley was transported to the Newberry County Detention Center.

• Randall Hiller Jr., 38, of 2130 McCravy St., Newberry, was charged with simple possession of marijuana, weapon law violations and public intoxication March 26. Officers responded to a report of a man who had just bought beer then proceeded to wave a gun in the parking lot of 1315 Kendall Road. The man was later observed walking into the College Park apartments. The officers arrived at the apartments and observed a man yelling and cursing behind one of the buildings who fit the clothing description given in the report. After giving the man several commands to raise his hands, which were ignored, the suspect reached for his jacket pocket, removed a pistol and tossed it on the ground. The suspect was tackled and placed in handcuffs. A search of his person revealed a marijuana blunt, and an additional bag of marijuana. The gun was determined to actually be a BB gun and the man, identified as Hiller, thanked officers for not shooting him. Hiller was transported to the Newberry County Detention Center.

• Buford Marcus Burkett, 49, of 415 Glenn St., Newberry, was charged with arson and public intoxication March 23. Officers responded to a report of a possible fire behind Whitaker Floor Covering and reviewed surveillance which depicted a man igniting trash around a dumpster. Later an officer observed a subject matching the clothing description walking along Wilson Rd and identified the man as Burkett. Burkett stated he had been at the incident location but denied intentionally starting the fire citing a possible cigarette accident. The officer reported Burkett’s eyes were glossy and he smelled of alcohol. Burkett was transported to the Newberry County Detention Center.
