NEWBERRY COUNTY — The residents of Foxbriar Subdivision have petitioned Newberry County Council to set a special election on April 12 to determine whether a special tax district should be created.

This special tax district would be for maintenance on Foxbriar Road and Foxbriar Court and would be based on a uniform service charge not to exceed $150. If the election results are in favor of creating this special district, County Council will pass an ordinance in time for the charge to be placed on this year’s tax bill in September.

Council passed a resolution calling for the Foxbriar Special Tax District election after Councilman Kirksey Koon made a motion and Councilman Bill Waldrop seconded.

In other business, Poseidon Equipment and Supply’s bid of $40,200.32 was chosen for fire department bunker gear. Tommy Long, emergency service coordinator, said an invitation to bid was solicited and advertised as required.

The bids were opened Feb. 25, with Poseidon being the only responsive bidder. Council approved the bid after Koon made a motion and Councilman Scott Cain seconded. The funding for this equipment was approved in the fiscal year 2015-16 budget for Board of Rural Fire Control in the amount of $60,000.

Other business

• Council approved buying a 2016 Ford Transit 250 van for $28,995.93 for the Facilities Management Department. This van, along with an annual salary, was approved by council via an ordinance amending the budget ordinance for a new facilities maintenance tech position. The quote is through state contract pricing and is within the budgeted amount of $32,500.

• Council approved final reading of an ordinance to rezone three acres from General Commercial to Basic Industrial. The parcel is located on the CR Koon Highway between Shrine Club Road and Cash Control Road, next to the Newberry County Water and Sewer Authority’s offices. This parcel once was home to a cement plant, and the property owner would like to reestablish that plant.

• Council approved final reading of an ordinance to rezone a .55 of an acre from single family residential to rural. The parcel is located at the corner of Birdsong Lane and SC 391. A mobile home that sat on the property was destroyed by a tornado several years ago and was not replaced. The property owner lost the use permission under regulations pertaining to the RS1 zoning district. Re-zoning the property to rural will permit placing a mobile home on the property.
