PROSPERITY — The Town of Prosperity, alongside Mayor Derek Underwood, Town Council, the Prosperity Business Association and the County Transportation Committee are actively working to bring vitality to downtown Prosperity.

One of the ways the town is doing this is with the paving of Main Street Prosperity. A total of $114,622.65 has been allocated through the CTC for the paving of Main Street.

“The funds were allocated through the CTC and are being directed towards the historic Main Street area within the Town of Prosperity starting through the main row of buildings leading into the historical area downtown, continuing through the Square down Main Street as well to the traffic light and railroad tracks as boundaries,” said Glenn Hamm, County Transportation Committee and Prosperity Business Association. “A lot of the money that the CTC gets is off of the gas tax so what we’re going to be able to see is a direct impact of the gas tax for the improvement and betterment of the Prosperity area. That’s just indicative of a lot of improvements going on throughout Newberry County based off of that.”

Hamm added that they are continuing to identify problems in hopes to improve and repair roadways.

“We continue to identify problems with the traffic that we see on the roadways, the weather systems that impact the roadways as well, there is always going to be a need. One of the other things that really helps out is when the public does make those needs apparent, the CTC meets monthly, it is open to the public, we invite the individuals of the community to get with a local representative or come to meetings,” he said.

The CTC meets the third Tuesday of the month at the Newberry County Courthouse Annex at 3 p.m. The next scheduled meeting is Jan. 15.

“There’s only so much county that I drive in on a given day and by having people from throughout the county continue to put in their input it lets us be able to make priorities as far as road improvements and repairs, with that being said the CTC does not handle all roads in Newberry County, it is a piece of the pie, part of the piece of the pie is the municipality as well,” Hamm said.

Hamm added that they are hoping to begin the paving of Main Street in Spring 2019.
