SILVERSTREET — The Town of Silverstreet’s Picnic in the Park on Aug. 15 at Angus Senn Park will be more than just a picnic with games, inflatables and a street dance — it will have enough going on to keep those who attend occupied for hours.

“This will just be a fun day before school starts and it will be fun for all ages,” Mayor Lisha Senn said.

Silverstreet held the picnic on a regular basis years ago but it had lapsed until about four years ago when the town started it up again. It wasn’t held last year because the town did not have a mayor.

“With us being without a mayor, we did not hold the event last year,” said Candy Bouknight, town clerk. “I hope our community and other communities will come out. They can come and meet us and voice what they want in the Silverstreet community.”

The picnic begins at 2 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m. Drinking and smoking will not be allowed.

The most important part of the picnic will be the food. According to Senn, there will be hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks all for sale. For $3, attendees will be able to buy a complete meal — hamburger or hot dog — plus chips and a drink. Snow cones will also be available

“The price for the food will just go to cover the cost. This is because the picnic is for the community, so we are making the prices as reasonable as possible,” Senn said. “We are also just fine if people want to bring their own food. It is a picnic after all.”

Those who attend will be able to cool off with inflatables, which all involve water. Laugh ‘N Leap is providing three inflatables, an obstacle course and two water slides (one large and one small). The inflatables will be for children and adults alike.

“We definitely recommend everyone either wear their bathing suits, or have a change of clothes,” Senn said.

A dunking booth will be occupied by various volunteers, including Bouknight. Games will include Bingo, a cake walk and interactive basketball inflatable.

“We will have prizes for Bingo. We are talking with local businesses to have prizes donated. We are hoping to get some gift baskets, free massages and other goodies,” Senn said.

The newest addition will be a street dance. DJ Travis Gilliam will play music all day and at 7 p.m. Abrams Street will be closed off for he street dance.

“We have talked about having a street dance in the past, but this is the first year we are doing it,” Senn said. “I hope we continue to grow the picnic like this so it can expand.”

The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office will have a command center at the picnic for guests to visit.

Parking is limited, but there will be parking available across the street at the Post Office and toward the old school.

“The earlier people come, the better chance of having good parking,” Bouknight said.
