
NEWBERRY — The Newberry Wolves women’s basketball team defeated the Cobras of Coker College 67-60 on Wednesday in their last regular season home game.
With the win, Newberry jumps to 15-12 overall and 14-7 in the South Atlantic Conference.
At the half, Meg Essex and Shelby Britten led the team in points with eight each. Samara Hill and Kirsten Dunsmore both two assists while Emily Perry grabbed four rebounds. Samantha Creed tallied two steals, scored five points, one block, and one assist.
For the game, Creed finished strong with a game-high of 22 points, three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and five steals. Essex scored 15 points, grabbed eight boards and had two blocks. Dunsmore led the team in assists with five while she grabbed six boards.
As a team, the Wolves shot 47.2% from the field and 63.2 percent from the line.
The Wolves got on the board at 8:49 with a 3-pointer from Handreck. Essex cut Coker’s lead to 6-5 with a layup at 7:31 before she hit a jumper at 7:08. Essex hit another jumper with 6:43 left to give the Wolves a 9-8 lead.
Scoring was quiet for Newberry until the 3:52 mark when Creed drained a 3-pointer to cut Coker’s lead to 14-12. Hannah Lepaio got on the board with 3:04 left when she hit a layup off a pass from Creed. Britten finished the quarter for Newberry with a 3-pointer with just eight seconds left.
The Wolves were down 21-17 going into the second quarter.
Britten started the second quarter for Newberry with a layup which turned into a 3-point play. Britten’s was fouled going up for the layup by Dawson to send her to the line.
At the 8:25 mark Creed cut Coker’s lead to one point (23-22) with a jumper. Three minutes later Essex hit a layup off a pass from Dunsmore to make the score 26-24 in the Cobras favor. Dunsmore got on the board with 4:27 left until the half with a layup off a pass from Essex.
Britten got Newberry’s last basket with 15 seconds left until halftime making the score 31-28 in favor of Coker.
Colleen Leung put the Wolves on the board just 34 seconds into the quarter with a layup off a pass from Dunsmore. Creed then hit a layup at 9:16 before Dunsmore went 2-for-2 at the line to cut Coker’s lead to 37-34.
Creed hit a jumper with 4:29 left before she hit a layup with 3:25 left to make the score 44-42 in favor of Coker. Perry went 2-for-2 at the line after being fouled by Kincaid with 21 seconds left in the quarter.
The Wolves went into the final quarter of the game behind by two points (49-47).
Newberry scored 20 points in the final quarter for the 67-60 win. Creed started it off with a 3-pointer at the 8:21 mark off a pass from Handreck. With 6:44 left in the game Essex hit a layup off a pass from Leung followed by a layup from Creed to give the Wolves a 55-54 lead.
Creed increased Newberry’s lead to 58-54 with a 3-pointer at 3:55 before Handreck made a layup at 2:57 for a 60-54 lead. At 2:37 Perry hit a layup followed by Essex who went 1-for-2 at the line for a 63-54 lead.
In the last 30 seconds of the game, Handreck scored two free throws followed by Creed going 2-for-2 at the line.
The Wolves travel to Brevard for their last regular season game on Feb. 27. Tipoff of the South Atlantic Conference game will be at 2 p.m.
