NEWBERRY — The Newberry men’s soccer program has named their captains ahead of the 2019 season in Eric Brody, Tarek Malz, and Sam Ottley.

Brody will enter his junior campaign as a captain for the Wolves. Last season the sophomore recorded one goal which ended up being the game-winner against Anderson. Brody led the team with four assists in 16 games, playing the second-most minutes of anyone on the team. The Orlando, Fla. was heavily relied on as the team’s main option for corner kicks, taking a team-high 53 in 2018.

Malz will enter next season as a senior on the backline for the Wolves. The Satrup, Germany native was a leader on defense in 2018, recording the fourth-most minutes with 1,329 total across 14 starts as a center back. Malz was named SAC Defensive Player of the Week by holding Anderson to only seven shots on goal in a 1-0 shutout victory.

Ottley heads into 2019 as a sophomore but was one of the more vocal leaders for the Wolves last season as a defender. The Telford, England native made 14 starts on the backline while providing 14 shots, five of them on goal, in 1,200 minutes.

“Our staff took the spring season to properly evaluate all our options for the captain positions and after getting feedback from our players and looking at who would best serve the team, we decided on these three,” said Head Coach Bryce Cooper.“Each has a unique leadership style that will provide good balance, accountability and the proper mentality to the team. I’m excited to watch them lead our team forward as they continue to help us build something special here.”
