NEWBERRY — Chelsey Cunningham’s walk-off homerun gave Newberry the doubleheader sweep over USC Aiken on Wednesday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.
The Wolves move to 10-2 on the season while the Pacers fall to 3-5.
Game One (Newberry wins 4-3 vs. USC Aiken – 9. Inn.)
Chelsey Cunningham hit her first career homerun as the Wolves pulled away with a 4-3 victory in nine innings.
Cunningham hit her solo blast in the second inning to give the Wolves an early lead. The Pacers responded in the fifth inning, scoring a run on error by the Wolves to tie the game.
Newberry answered back in the bottom half of the inning when an error on a throw to plate allowed the Wolves to add another run.
The Wolves took advantage of another error by the Pacers to win the game in the bottom of the ninth after Natalie Willis’fly out to center field allowed Paige Meyer to score when the center fielder threw an errant ball towards the infield.
Alyssa Ball started the game for the Wolves, pitching seven innings and striking out four batters. Ivy Hayes picked up her first win of the season after she came into relief pitch in the eighth.
Game Two (Newberry wins 5-3 vs. USC Aiken)
Cunningham’s walk-off homerun to left center gave the Wolves the dramatic sweep over the Pacers in the second game of the doubleheader.
USC Aiken took the lead to start the game on a solo homerun in the first inning.
Newberry quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning as Meyer led off with a single to the shortstop, outrunning the throw to first to get on base safely. Willis then singled to right field as Meyer advanced to second and then to third on a fielding error. The Pacers walked Haley Simonds to load the bases for Cunningham. The designated player in the game reached on a fielder’s choice to second base, allowing Meyer to sneak home.
Both teams traded runs leading to a tie-game in the bottom of the seventh. Simonds started the inning off with a hard hit single up the middle of the field. Cunningham took a 3-2 count before crushing a walk-off homerun to give the Wolves a 5-3 win.
Meyer went 3-for-3 with a walk in the game while Willis finished with two hits.
Selice Daley picked up her fourth win of the year, pitching a complete game with six strikeouts.
