NEWBERRY — Newberry’s women’s soccer team swept Mars Hill 4-0 on Saturday afternoon. Prior to the game, the Wolves honored four seniors Morgan Powers, Valeria Newcomb, Rachelle Serrano and Alyssa Ortega.

Ortega recorded her second career hat trick and added an assist as the Wolves (5-10, 2-7 SAC) played their best offensive game this season. She accounted for both of Newberry’s goals in the first half and opened the scoring barrage at the 22nd minute of the first half on a feed from Daphne Heyaime. Ortega added her second goal just five minutes later on a short strike from Courtney Velazquez.

Ortega completed her hat trick in the 80th minute of the second half as she beat her defender to the opposing territory and struck the ball in. The hat trick gives her ten goals on the season, which puts her atop the leader board in goals in the South Atlantic Conference.

Powers made her mark six minutes into the second half, sailing a shot in the back right of the net. The Wolves out shot Mars Hill 22-5 and held a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. Newberry was uncontested in the contest, only having to make three saves. The Wolves had a 7-2 advantage in corners.

The Wolves travel to Erskine for a non-conference match up on Oct. 25, before finishing the regular season off at Lenoir-Rhyne on Oct. 28.
