NEWBERRY COUNTY — Free regional notary public seminars are being offered this summer and fall for all South Carolina notaries and those interested in becoming a notary.
The sessions offer a reminder that the 2014 legislative session brought many critical improvements to the law regulating South Carolina notaries public. Most sections of the law had not been updated since the 1960s.
Notaries public hold an important position of responsibility. It is critical to understand the duties and responsibilities of notaries under the law.
The key function of a notary is to protect citizens against fraudulent activity. Once commissioned as a notary public, it is the responsibility of the notary to maintain a level of training necessary to perform the duties of the position as required by law.
The seminars will address state laws governing the duties and responsibilities of notaries. In addition, the seminar will provide information how notaries can avoid pitfalls related to the unauthorized practice of law. It is a public service of the Secretary of State’s Office.
The closest one to Newberry will be held Sept. 26 in Greenwood at the Greenwood County Library, 600 S. Main St. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the seminar will begin at 6 p.m. It will conclude by 7:30 p.m.
