WHITMIRE — The Town of Whitmire will get its shine on this weekend when residents and volunteers combine their efforts with Keep Newberry County Beautiful for the third annual community clean-up effort.
Those wanting to help are asked to gather at the Community Flower Garden on Church Street at 9 a.m. The clean-up will end at noon after roads, sidewalks, gutters and highways have been cleaned up.
Those helping are also expected to give some attention to Main Street, Church Street, Union Street, Leaman Avenue and Satterwhite Street.
“This is a very important event for our community,” said Maria McMurtury, a member of Whitmire’s Economic Development Board. “It brings people together and the way it will be successful is if we come together and maintain organization.”
Danielle Rowe, executive director of KNCB, said the effort in Whitmire “is considered as the Great American Cleanup,” which is a massive litter pickup in the county where the organization gives out grants and funding.
Rowe said Whitmire Community School is expected to have a contingent helping out as are a few churches along with all ages of volunteers, from the toddler set up to senior citizens.
This diverse community wants to show the pride of all their hearts, and to bring everyone together.
Doug Heydt, chairman of KNCB, has been involved since the start of the program in 2010. He said there has been progress through the years.
“Our first year we only had 14 people come help, our second year we had around 60 to 70 people, and I hope we have more come out,” he said. “Without having the people of our community help clean, it wouldn’t be successful so just having people come out shows how successful we will become.”
