NEWBERRY — Hillside Sausage Company, located at 757 Kendall Road, officially opened its doors to the community on June 30, being Newberry’s newest business that allows its customers to purchase freshly made meats.
“My father Terry Hawkins has 55 years of experience and when the Food Lion on this side of town closed, there was just a big void for people on this side of town, so we just decided that we thought it was a good opportunity, and plus, Counts Sausage had closed so there was nothing local that you could get fresh sausage,” said Brian Hawkins. “We thought that there was a desire for people to have something local. We do it every day, we make it fresh so we don’t have to wait for it to be brought in on a truck or anything, it’s made right here every day.”
At Hillside Sausage Company, although sausage is their specialty, they do carry a full line of other meats for customers to choose from.
“Fresh pork sausage is our specialty, but we do have a full line of any cut of meet that you want,” said Hawkins.
Hawkins also said that over time he and his wife plan to expand as the business begins to grow.
“I think we want to stay in this location, but maybe just add on some additional space over time to do some frozen vegetables and things of that nature,” said Hawkins.
Everything at Hillside Sausage Company is weighed and priced by the pound.
“We can sell to restaurants. We are not licensed to sell to other grocery stores. But we can sell to the restaurants and hopefully when churches and schools have steak suppers or anything like that we can fix that for them,” said Hawkins.
Although they have only been open for a week, Hawkins said that the community seems to be excited about the business.
“We’re primarily full service, so you can come in a get something cut specifically to what you want or a certain thickness that you want. I think the community is really to have someone local,” said Hawkins. “This is a family-oriented business and we’re thankful to God for this opportunity that we’re allowed to be here. We want to serve the people, we want to give the people what they want and we just want to be available to the community.”
“This was always a dream of his. Even though I work a full-time job as a nurse, I support his dream,” said Amy Hawkins.
