HICKORY, N.C. — Newberry track and field competed at the South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships and had several student-athletes break both personal and school records in the first day of competition.

Newberry’s men’s team earned four points on the day, taking seventh place after day one. The women’s team earned 5.5 points for ninth place.

In the Field:

Kayshon Mitchell posted a career-best mark in the men’s hammer throw at 45.77m, earning fifth place in the event. Mitchell has been on a hot streak in the final stretch of the season as the sophomore topped his previous-best in the event just a week prior at the Gamecock Invitational.

Freshman Treyshawn Miller would compete in the hammer throw as well, posting a mark of 24.96m.

Tyrese Grant who has shown steady improvement over the course of the season posted a new personal record in the men’s long jump with a 6.55m mark, earning 11th place in the event.

Sophomore standout D’Arion Johnston continued her strong placings taking fifth in the women’s long jump with a 5.22m mark. Elka Variste followed with a 5.12m mark to take seventh in the same event.

A trio of Wolves earned placings in the women’s hammer throw as Octavia Grandy earned 15th place with a mark at 32.33m. Rikaya Williams finished just behind Grandy with a 31.86m mark for 16th while Gari Forehand broke her previous personal best with a throw of 27.43m.

On the Track:

James Glenn led a pack of Wolves in the 200m prelims, just missing out on qualifying for the finals as the senior posted a time of 22.18. Cameron Henderson followed with a time of 22.56 while Grant earned his second personal record of the day with a 23.50 time. Michael Parrish and Granger Garrison rounded out the bunch finishing with times of 23.90 and 26.26 respectively.

Henderson would just miss out on qualifying for the finals of the 400m after posting a school-record time of 49.56 in the preliminary round, earning ninth place. Garrison would also compete, finishing with a personal record time of 49.70 for 11th place.

Glenn would once again lead the way, this time in the 100m prelims, just missing out on qualifying after posting a career-best and school-record time of 10.66 in the event. Parrish would also post a personal record in the event with a time of 11.15 while Donald Smith earned a personal best time of 11.59.

Elijah Fulmore qualified for the finals of the 110m hurdles after posting an incredible time of 15.26 for sixth-place in the preliminary round. Fulmore would also earn a 10th place finish in the 400m hurdles with a time of 57.60.

Chandler Stanley shaved nearly 35 seconds off his previous best in the 3,000m steeple, finishing in 10:38.00.

Juniors Carlos Hernandez and Shelton Reynolds both broke personal records in the 10,000m run with Hernandez finishing in 35:17.30 and Reynolds trailing just behind with a time of 35:37.05.

On the women’s side, Johnston earned another personal best in the 200m with a time of 26.03 and 15th place.

Tahleebah Martin qualified for the finals of the 400m hurdles after posting a school-record time of 1:05.27, finishing second in the preliminary race.

Sophomore Cassie Poulard would also qualify for the Wolves in the 100m hurdles after posting a personal record time of 15.34, taking seventh place in the prelims.

Variste toppled her career-best time in the 100m with a time of 12.29, taking 11th place in the preliminary race. Golson would also post a personal record with a time of 13.07 in the event.

Anne Bouwkamp earned her best time of her sophomore season in the 3000m steeple with a time of 13:45.79 for 11th place.
