NEWBERRY — Mayor Foster Senn and City of Newberry staff visited Boundary Street Elementary School on Friday, December 7 for their annual Arbor Day tree planting. Arbor Day marks the beginning of tree planting season. Climate determines when this is in any given area and South Carolina’s planting season begins in December and ends in mid-March.
Each year, a different city elementary school is chosen to receive a tree of their choosing to plant on the school grounds. Boundary Elementary principal, Allison Stribble, chose an Okame Cherry Tree for their school this year.
Students in Ashley Parker and Cassie Wests’ fourth and fifth grade Montessori classrooms prepared educational facts about trees and Arbor Day to share as part of the ceremony. Senn also talked with students on the history of Arbor Day in South Carolina and the importance of trees to a community.
Senn said the city appreciated Boundary Street Elementary partnering together with them for Arbor Day.
“Arbor Day is always fun and signals the start of the tree planting season in South Carolina. The students at Boundary were enthusiastic, smart and impressive,” Senn said.
City Manager Matt DeWitt said he was impressed with how prepared the students were and their knowledge of trees and the history of Arbor Day.
“I know this tree is in good hands with the Montessori classes at Boundary,” he said.
